The common approximate conversion is: divide your CGPA (out of 10) by 10, then multiply by 4. An 8.0 CGPA becomes roughly 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. This is a linear scaling used for planning purposes, not an official, universally-recognized equivalence.
The common conversion method
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average), most commonly on a 10-point scale in India and several other countries, is usually converted to a 4.0 GPA with a simple linear scale: (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. A 7.5 CGPA becomes approximately 3.0; a 9.0 CGPA becomes approximately 3.6.
Why this isn't an official standard
No single international body governs CGPA-to-GPA conversion the way an exchange rate governs currency. Different universities, government agencies, and credential evaluators can each use a slightly different formula, so the same CGPA can produce a marginally different GPA depending on who's calculating it.
